Community Involvement
o Pi Kappa Phi members participated in seven other Greek organization’s philanthropies in the fall and 13 for other Greek organization’s philanthropies in the spring.
o The chapter had four members involved with the planning of Purdue University Dance Marathon, which benefitted Indianapolis’ Riley’s Children’s Hospital and families of children with cancer at IU-Clarian North Hospital. The Dance Marathon raised more than $170,000.
o As has been the tradition for more than 20 years, the chapter hosted a Christmas party for the local underprivileged children. This time, rather than hosting at the chapter house, members traveled to a local Headstart program which housed younger children who typically do not get recognition from Purdue University organizations. Check out pictures from this past years event at the bottom of the page.
o The chapter conducted a 72-hour bike-a-thon to raise money for the needs of David Feltner, an undergraduate who is suffered from cancer. The bike-a-thon ran from March 29 to April 1 – a period of near-record cold. In fact chapter and non-chapter riders (including two sorority members) rode in snow and freezing rain. The goal was to raise $5,000 and they raised more than $13,500. The goal was to equip Feltner with a special needs dog that could assist him with balance, retrieval of items and to overcome his loss of the sense of smell. The dog was purchased, however, Feltner’s condition deteriorated shortly after the ride when doctors determined his cancer was terminal. Brother Feltner passed away in June. The dog will go to another needy family and the rest of the proceeds will assist in cancer research and to help families with children being treated for cancer.
o For the first time ever, the Omega Chapter paired with the Purdue Special Olympics Club for “Spread the Word to End the Word”. Together, the two organizations set up a booth in a high traffic area of campus and talked with passerby’s about how offensive the word is, handed out fliers, and made buttons for people to wear. There was also a banner people could sign that would be hung in the student union showing all of campus how many people support the movement.
o Everyday brothers from Pi Kappa Phi volunteer at Lafayette Jefferson High School in their special needs room. The students always love when the "Purdue guys" come to class. Pi Kapps also donates a portion of what they raise for Push America to the special needs room at Jeff, this year Pi Kapps donated $2,550. A photo of the check presentation is below.
