The Purdue chapter (Omega) was recognized with 15 awards during the Aug. 5 to 8, 2010 Supreme Chapter in Orlando, FL, including being named as the top Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in the nation.

For the second straight year, the fraternity received the Kroeg Award. It is given to the chapter that is considered the best in its league (campuses with 17 or more fraternities). In April, Pi Kappa Phi was named the top fraternity at Purdue for the third consecutive year.

Dan Cronin, a senior in civil engineering, was named the Phillip Summers Student of the Year Award, meaning he was named the top undergraduate student among the 7.000 Pi Kappa Phis nationwide. In April, Cronin was named the top fraternity president at Purdue.

The Purdue chapter has been honored two out of the last three years with the national Student of the Year Award. Steve Holstclaw won the award in 2008.

Eric Allen, a May graduate in chemical engineering, was named the national Pi Kappa Phi Vice President of the Year for his efforts as recruitment chairman. Under Allen’s leadership, the fraternity recruited 53 new members in 2009-10.

The chapter was given the Outstanding Recruitment Program award for its new member rush efforts in 2009-10.

Purdue was one of four out 155 chapters nationwide to receive the Push America Core Values Award. Push America is the Pi Kappa Phi national service project helping the disabled across the country. The Purdue chapter raised more than $10,000 for Push America, has a local volunteer relationship assisting special needs classes at a local high school and conducted a fund raising, Greekwide, weeklong talent-empathy training event in the spring. The Core Values Award recognizes chapters that best embody the core values of Push America – abilities, teamwork, empathy and integrity.

“This chapter’s devotion to a collective excellence garnered it the Chapter of the Year Award on its campus,” national CEO Mark Timmes said in presenting The Kroeg Award. “And, for their many successes, we are pleased to announce the Omega chapter at Purdue University as our 2009 Kroeg Award recipient.”

Cited as Omega’s merits were its No. 2 grade ranking out of 41 Purdue fraternities with a 3.05 average GPA from 98 men. Also noted were its seven (of nine possible) different chapter-related awards in various Purdue Inter Fraternity Council categories. In the last two academic years, the chapter received individual awards for Purdue Greek Man of the Year, Greek Scholar of the Year and Chapter Advisor of the Year. Omega received recognition for being Level III, the highest rating, in each of Pi Kappa Phi’s Seven Objectives of Chapter Excellence, which led to one of 29 Champion Master Chapter Awards at Pi Kapp College.

Omega also won the Push Innovator’s Award for innovative programming with the Pi Kapp 100-Mom’s Day event. An Omega undergraduate won the 2009 Push Chairman of the Year Award. The chapter also was recognized as the top chapter of 146 nationally in Sound Chapter Operations.
Pi Kappa Phi has 132 chartered chapters nationwide and 14 associate chapters, making it the 10th largest national fraternity. There are 46 chapters nationwide in the Kroeg Award class.
“We wanted to be recognized as the top chapter at Purdue and within Pi Kappa Phi, not for the hardware, but because we could use being in contention for a Kroeg as a measuring stick that we were providing the best opportunities for our members,” Steve Holtsclaw, a 2008 graduate, said. “It's amazing to see the growth in the last few years but having two members riding in Journey of Hope, serving as leaders on campus, achieving in the classroom, and remaining at the top of intramurals really show the balance in the chapter and make all of this possible.”
Holtsclaw was the most honored Greek man in Purdue history when he graduated in 2008 with a degree in management. He won the Phillip Summers Pi Kappa Phi Student of the Year award, recognizing him as the top undergraduate student among nearly 7,000 nationally. He was also the 2008 Purdue Greek Man of the Year and won the Wayne Colvin Award as the top student leader in the nation from the Mid-American Greek Council Association.
“This award not only confirms Omega as an example of a superior chapter within Pi Kappa Phi--it affirms the Omega Chapter as the standard to which others will seek to follow,” said former chapter president Tom Harzula.
After receiving a degree in political science in 2007, Harzula traveled the country as a leadership consultant for the national fraternity.

The chapter has received other recognition in the recent past. It was the RB Stewart Award, which means it was the top fraternity at Purdue in 2007-08. It also won seven of nine categories en route to the top prize.
“The chapter has been working hard lately and it's great to see our efforts recognized on a national level,” said Jim Vasil, the Fall 2008 president.
